Where can I find info on origins of colors? i.e. bugs were source of purple, royalty wore it?

September 292009

I am a high school art teacher and just finished teaching about the symbolism of colors, such as yellow being for cheerful, brown for earthy, black for gloomy or dignified, blue for cool, calm, etc. But several students had questions that were more in depth. Like on the source of the dyes and the history of the color, such as why white for weddings, black for funerals, red for a matador’s cape. I asked them to research it on the internet, but I am following my own advice and asking for help ! I tried to think of what I already know and saffron might be a source of yellow, cadmiums, as in red and orange, seem to be highly toxic. I want to know MORE ! And about the dyes/color sources too. I bet it would make a fascinating geography lesson. Thanks in advance.

One thing you may want to consider in you teaching is the cultural differences that relate to color. For instance, in the Asian cultures, white is used at funerals., not black.

In the western cultures, white symbolizes purity. Hence the color associated with a virgin bride.

As far as the red in a matador’s cape. It’s interesting to note that bulls are color blind. The red cape is only for the crowd. The bull is attracted to the movement and attacks that.

So, a very interesting discussion could be developed in how the different cultures interpret the meaning of colors.

Current Event news articles! Help me?

September 292009

I need to find 4 current event articles dealing with NY and US only. They have to be a current article from the following 8 papers…NY times, Boston Globe, Miami Herald, Chicago Times, L.A. Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Washington Times…

Not only do I have to find the articles, but they must connect to the NYS learning standards (standard 1 only) for social studies.

I’ve looked for an hour now and can’t find an article. I need help finding the articles, but I”ll be doing the write ups and lesson plans for them, so you aren’t doing my work for me. i don’t want people to think that I am just trying to get you to do my work. I am not. I just need help starting!

Thanks if you cna help me!
no I am not in high school. I am a colege senior. I just need help finding the articles, I don’t need sarcasm thanks. I am in Block, and all education majors may have an inkling of an idea what that means. But for those of you that don’t it is basically a semester they overload you with work on purpose. Now add two jobs to that and see what you got. You have me. I am not asking you to do my homework, as I stated before. i just need help finding an article I can write about, connect to the standards of NY for social studies and then create a lesson plan about the article. And I have to do that 4 times. I have tried their websites, it is the connection part to the standards I am having trouble with. Thanks to those of you that are trying to help atleast!

i hope u find something

I need a good lesson plan template?

September 292009

does anyone have a good lesson plane template for teachers? I’m taking a music class and we have to creat 2 lesson plans that have to do with children and music.

Any ideas?

This is the form I used in college and still use when I create a formal plan for observations by my principal. It is well thought-out and includes all crucial aspects of a meaningful lesson. I hope this helps!

My mom is either gonna send me to guitar lessons or piano lesson ?

September 292009

Which one should i chose? I’m 13 years old………. which one would be easier?

I would say learn Piano. Piano is like a base instrument. Once you learn the piano you will easily be able to understand every other instrument and learn it a lot easier. You will learn bass and treble clef, all your scales and basically everything you need to know to play any other instrument. You might feel kinda geeky playing piano at first, but after a few years you will be glad you chose the piano. Because you can just transfer everything you learned from the piano over to the guitar.

Teaching piano lessons for the first time - where do I start?

I am going to start teaching piano lessons for the first time. I have 20 years experience myself, so I know my instrument, but I’m not sure where to start with beginners. What series of books should I use? What should a lesson consist of? How much should I charge? Any help that anyone could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You didn’t say what age you hope to teach, so I’m going to talk about the average 7-9 year old student.

Start them in the Alfred Basic Lesson book and Alfred Fun book. These books coordinate with each other so you know when to assign each song. Start with teaching the finger numbers and the basic note values. Just follow the pages in the books and they will introduce new topics when it’s time. Only assign songs you have had time to go over in the lesson. Have the student bring a notebook so they know exactly what to practice.

Once the child gets to reading notes, have them start in Hal Leonard Notespeller 1 and give them a written assignment each week.

Make sure you have a written policy to protect yourself from parents who will try to take advantage of younger teachers.

I always gauge my fees on what our Community Ed is charging. Right now they are $21/per half hour, so I am charging $20. Since you are a new teacher you should charge anywhere between $10-$15. If you are well-known in your area for playing the piano you can charge more.

Why teachers have difficulty in creating lesson plan?

September 292009

What are the factors to be consider in creating lesson plan?

You have to know where the students are, what they know, what they need to know, and how they can best understand it.

Rigor, relevance, and relationships.

Rigor: the lesson must be rigorous (don’t just spoon fed them)
Relevance: the lesson must relate to the students’ interests
Relationships: teachers must establish and maintain a relationship with students so that students will feel comfortable in the classroom

Russian Geography lessons for 8th graders in the US?

September 272009

I’m teaching 3rd graders Russian Geography this year at our local Saturday Russian School in the US. I was wondering what would be good lessons for them, as I don’t really hang out with 3rd graders a lot, so I don’t know what would be possible for them. I was thinking maybe 3 vocabulary words a week (lake, river, ocean, mountain, etc) in Russian and English, and then have them be able to locate 5 cities, a few oceans, rivers, etc. I’m not sure what else they would be able to learn.

Also, does anyone know where I could find a nice simple Map of Russia online, where they could see a few cities, the major rivers, mountains, etc, and color it in, or something else that would be simple for 3rd graders? Thanks!!
3rd grade! sorry, it’s been a long day!

3rd graders or 8th graders? What age are 3rd graders? There is a great game by Mayfair Games called "Russian Rails":

http://www.mayfairgames.com/shop/product/4500-4699/pages/4503.htm

It is very educational. You build your train tracks, and carry cargo back and forth between various cities. So you lean the major cities, what products come from those areas, etc. It says it is for ages 12 and up.

Mayfair makes these same games for various parts of the world: U.S., Europe, India, Russia, Australia, etc. They are a great fun way to learn Geography.

Another Poem… What Do You Think?

September 272009

Forgotten like socks
Underneath teenage beds my existence lied hidden from my eyes
In grade six
Until Caucasian lips
Forced poetry into lesson plans
Witch then forced my mix hands
To feed words onto blue lines
Giving me the freedom to regurgitate memories for a grade
Dried tears lied in the middle of note books and these note books became my own history books because in grade seven it became apparent that
Yellow skin does not have a section in social studies text books
Suicide thoughts came from pen points like thunder in a rain storm
I drew my scars with pried only to hide the pain I felt
Then I fell for a stuttering slam poet
Whose poetry never stuttered and if it did
Well poetry taught me how to look past that
Funny how our eyes only met between stanzas
Poetry helped our hands meet in every line brake
I carved memories of a beautiful mistress on lose leaf
Verbally drew salted water falls on scrap paper
And fought bipolar battles with ink

I have written my auto biography
Not up to now but up to last night

it sounds very bitter to me, but well written, it conveys your thoughts I believe

Do I need to tell my landlord if I want to teach music lessons out of my rental home?

September 272009

My roommate and I are looking for a nice, clean, quiet place in a very tight and expensive market. She is a voice major and wants to teach small group music lessons for toddlers and small children during the day - maybe once or twice a week for a couple of hours a day. The kids are always accompanied by their parents and the activities don’t involve food or paint or any messy or noisy activities.

We want to know if we are legally required to tell our future landlords about her plans or if it will be along the same lines as having friends over a few times a week.

We already had one landlord say "He doesn’t want kids in his house" but we don’t have kids living there or eating there or doing any of the messy kid things. We felt this was an unreasonable attitude. We can’t see it being a problem but we are worried about being turned away from other places and not having anywhere to live next month.

If we didn’t tell them, could they come back and say we deceived them? Would they have grounds to evict us? We want to be upfront but are scared they would jump to the wrong idea of what she would be doing and imagine it would be like a daycare which it is not like at all.

She has made plans to get liability insurance and all the other necessary arrangements.

Do we need to tell them?

You won’t get a business license without the landlords permission. It is also VERY probable that the house is not zoned for business. If you have more then 2 visitors a day to a home business you need to be dual zoned, commercial/residential.
