Is there a guitar lesson app for an iPod touch?

August 272011

I am looking for a way to learn guitar in my free time. Between work and school I don’t have time for actual lessons.

Well there are some apps showing chords and scales so you can definitely learn something from them http://mattodegaard.wordpress.com/2009/05/13/my-fav-guitar-apps-for-the-iphone/

Would it be awkward to wear my guitar teacher’s band shirt to a lesson?

August 242011

My guitar teacher is in a band and I went to a concert wear he was an opening band. I bought a shirt to help his band. I wanted to wear the shirt but I don’t know if it would be awkward to wear a shirt (with his face on it) to one of my guitar lessons.

I wouldn’t think much of it. I’d probably just say "Hey nice shirt!" and appreciate the support and free advertising my student was supplying for my band.

What song should I learn for my next guitar lesson?

August 222011

I need to pick another song to learn. I have lessons, but I always have a fun song. I’ve already done:
No Rain
Seven Nation Army
Free Fallin
Run Around
Breakeven
Wish You Were Here

This is basically what I like. I’m a 13 y.o. girl but I don’t exactly like pop music. I’ve only been taking lessons for a year on an acoustic guitar, so nothing too hard please. Thank you! (10 points I have until Wednesday!)

Wonderwall - Oasis

VERY easy song to play and learn, and a fun one, too. I think it probably goes with the style of songs you’ve already posted.

Also, if you want to learn more Tom Petty, "Last Dance With Mary Jane" isn’t that hard. The only part that might be tricky for a beginner is the hammer on for the A Minor chord, but all of the chords in the song are open.

should i have to pay for a consultation before guitar lesson?

August 202011

I am starting guitar lessons this week , well , more like I am talking to my future teacher , it won’t really be a lesson. I am going to be paying her at the the end of the month, do you think she is going to charge for the consultation, or whatever? I believe we will just be talking about certain guitar books, etc.

opinions, experiences??

There is no way I would pay for a consultation. It’s like shopping in a store. You check the merchandise, see if you like it, and if so, move ahead and pay for it.

The most outrageous charge I’ve ever seen was a neighbor whose dog was old and infirm and had to be put to sleep. The veterinarian charged them an extra $25 for GRIEF COUNSELING. All the vet did was ask her if she was sure that was the right decision and asked her if she was going to be OK to drive home.

There are some money-grubbing people out there and you’ll recognize them when they charge for breathing the air in their lobby.

But, just to be sure, always ask in advance if the consultation is free.

Where can I find a lesson plan book that I can decorate or customize the cover?

August 152011

I’m looking for a good lesson plan book for teachers where I can decorate the cover or customize it online. Does anyone have any ideas?

Just get a full sheet of adhesive paper. Then you can stick it on the front cover and decorate however you want.

Where are good places to post local guitar lesson ads?

August 132011

I am trying to teach beginner guitar lessons locally, however I’m not very sure what is the best way to go about advertising, Ive never done something like this so I have no clue where to start. Ive already posted and ad on craigslist, but what are other ways I can get more exposure? Any other websites or good places locally I can post fliers? Much appreciated!

Just post them next to any local guitars & musical instruments shop, since beginners will buy guitars & they’ll find the lessons post :)

What to except from my first guitar lesson?

August 112011

So I have been playing guitar for 8 years and am somewhat good. I play fingerstyle stuff on my classical guitar.

Tonight I am going in for my first lesson… Feeling sort of nervous. What should I expect? What should I say? I don’t really know what songs I want to learn because I’ve been in a music rut lately

How did you pick your teacher? If not careful you’re going to know more than your new “teacher”.

I would recommend demanding two free lessons from prospective teachers, expecting to audition several before selecting one.

Don’t be nervous, you’re interviewing the instructor – he/she is undergoing a job interview!

Ask the instructor their specialty. Request a short performance. Is this something you would like to learn?

You play a classical guitar and looking for advanced lessons. Unless you’re seeking classical guitar lessons, it’s not likely the instructor will bring a classical guitar to the first lesson. Would be helpful if he/she owned one to instruct you.

Congratulations on taking lessons, make sure you pick a good teacher.

How do I plan 6 weeks of horseback riding lessons as an instructor?

August 82011

Posted in lessons | 4 Comments »

I am just starting as an riding instructor (I"ll be teaching mostly beginners) and I need a lesson plan. It will be 6 weeks of beginner lessons then 6 weeks of intermediate lessons (if the student returns of course:P) So I’m basically just wanting to know what to teach in the first lesson, what to teach in the second lesson, etc. The lessons will be once a week for one hour. Thanks!

On the 6 weeks of lessons you should have the student have an hour lesson. The 1st half hour teaching them how to groom a horse, tack a horse up, untack them, parts of the tack, etc. The 2nd half hour they should be riding. However, I do think the program will need to be longer than 6 weeks per set of lessons. They should be at least 12 weeks. It takes around 4 months for people to be able to trot confidently. It takes 6+ months to canter, and that isn’t even confidently. If you did 12 weeks for each set of lessons, the riders would be able to canter at the end, which would be a great goal!

Beginner Lessons:
At the end of 12 weeks you decide, the riders should be able to walk, trot, have the beat of the trot down, have diagonals, have a pretty good 2 point, know how to tack up, groom, and lead a horse in and out of a stall. If your class is only 6 weeks, the rider should be able to groom, tack up, lead a horse in an out of a stall, trot, but not with diagonals, or to the beat, they should have a 2 point, but not a very good one.

What to Teach:

6 Weeks: You should have the riders on the lunge line, and have them walk with their hands on their hips, shoulders, heads, etc. Teach them heels down, eyes up, etc. Trot at every lesson, and tell them about diagonals, and the beat of the trot, but don’t expect them to get it. Keep them on the lunge line at all times. If you feel they are advanced enough, jog along side them with the lunge line in hand while they trot on the rail. Teach them how to groom, tack up, un tack, etc.

12 Weeks: You should have the riders on the lunge line, and have them walk with their hands on their hips, shoulders, heads, etc. Teach them heels down, eyes up, etc. Trot at every lesson, and tell them about diagonals, and the beat of the trot, and expect them to get it after the 12 weeks is up. If you feel they are advanced enough, jog along side them with the lunge line in hand while they trot on the rail, but your goal is to have them trot on the rail without you, even if they are all over the place. Teach them how to groom, tack up, un tack, etc.

Intermediate Lessons:
By the end of this session, they should be able to tack up/down, groom, bathe (if possible with weather) lead a horse, have an acceptable 2 point, have diagonals, the trot beat, be on the rail alone.

What to Teach:

6 Weeks: You will still be working on getting the trot beat, diagonals, etc. After the first 2 weeks, you want the rider to be on the rail trotting confidently. By the end on the 2nd 6 weeks, the rider should be able to W/T.

12 Weeks: The riders may still need a little work on trotting, but if not, you can move on to cantering. Again, stay on the lunge line until they are comfortable/confident. By the end of the 2nd 12 weeks, the rider should be able to W/T/C!

*You should not just have 6 or 12 week options, you should take as many weeks as the riders need. Still, 12 weeks won’t be enough for everyone. You need to forget about how many weeks, and you will realize that once you start teaching.*

*Also, using a halter, and attaching reins to the sides of the halter when lunging is a great idea so the kids aren’t pulling on the horse’s mouth. You can control the horse with voice commands, lunge line, and lunge whip*

Good Luck! :)
