The lesson should be about thirty minutes long. Also keep in mind it is March, so the children are almost ready for Kindergarten. Thank you!
In response to Andy Y, this is for a preschool class. I am looking for some interesting ideas for my preschool class, as I am getting bored with lessons I’ve given in years past. I’ve also worked with many of the same colleagues for a few years now, and we’ve all shared ideas. I was just looking for some fresh new ideas that I may not have heard of. Thanks.
Cook with the class: measurement is math!
A lot of basic addition is done with counters, but if you have access to a water table, you can have them pour water tinted with food coloring into graduated cylinders to test the answer to 3+2=? (fill a cup to the number three with water and another clear measuring cup to two and pour them in together and have someone read the answer).
Sorting is also a math skill, so you can give them a variety of items and have them put them into groups or sort items and have them guess why you grouped them together (eg. the same buttons might be sorted by color, shape, size, number of holes, etc.)
Give them each rulers and teach them to identify a foot and then have them search around the room for things that are less than a foot, about a foot, or more than a foot long and share their answers.
