Anybody find teachers making students do unnecessary things?

February 142010

So sometimes you have great teachers. And sometimes you don’t.
I find that teachers that make their students do things a little much, like coloring maps in social studies, or making power points on subjects that the class already goes over(without much other research) are simply useless. I mean, when are we actually going to need to know how to color the area where the Mayans existed orange?
There are just so many things that really are unnecessary, and I don’t understand why teachers make kids do these things.
Do they just run out of things to do in their lesson plans or something?

sometimes they just follow the suggestions in the teacher’s edition. I ignore a lot of childish things that are great with children but don’t really work that well with teenagers.

What are you learning in social studies and do you have any questions?

February 112010

If so, I’d be happy to give you resources or clarify anything for you. I just finished writing lesson plans and my shower, so I have some time to kill. Also, I can’t go anywhere it’s a snowstorm outside.
I LOVE ancient Egypt (Kemet). Have fun with that!
Ok mystere…btw that is 1 hell of an awesome avatar.
Revolutionary War: Did you know the Germans (Hessians) played a role in it? Are you learning the contribution that African Americans made to it? Also, try to get the British ptv on it too : )
Just Dance: That would be annoying. I would try to remember more of what went on during each king’s reign rather than the specific dates. For ex, in 1066 Guillaume the Conqueror of France invaded England, and many French elite followed, influencing the English medieval language. It’s more important to know what happened in England in that era than to memorize exact dates.
Emily: Interesting. You might not know but you are also learning about Gay culture/contribution. Michelangelo, Donatello, Da Vinci, and more were homosexual. The Italian Renaissance was also the time of secret societies. You can find interesting facts at the HistoryChannel.com
Narcissa: It’s a weaning process when it comes to the Iraq War. The government *feels* that taking all soldiers out at 1 time would be detrimental. It’s not proven fact, just a feeling. You can read TIME magazine to find more out about that.
Did you know Stalin killed more people than Hitler?
It is a belief that we (Americans) went to Vietnam b/c the US government wanted to ignore the problem of equality (esp equality for African Americans). A sort of smoke and mirrors if you will. This is 1 side of the story, there are many. Feel free to pick up PBS documentaries at your library.
Band Geek: which country? I’m guessing England

I am entirely finished with my history classes. Forever. But I am quite interested in the workings of Communism, the ideals of Karl Marx, and the Cuban Revolution. Also, the relationships between Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Zedong.
And, why exactly did we intervene in Vietnam? I don’t see why those countries falling to Communism would have affected America’s economy besides us losing a few resources? Surely we are not that greedy. Oh, and why we have not pulled out of the Iraqi War by now.

Should I be a veterinarian or a teacher?

December 212009

I don’t know what to choose. I would love to help animals. I love them but i don’t think i can put them to sleep without crying and i am allergic to cats all though i can take medicine for that. I would love to be a teacher. A language art and social studies teacher for 5,6,or 7th grade. I don’t know if lesson planning and stuff like that would be hard though. Anyone who is a teacher or a vet or neither please tell me how these jobs are and what i should do. Thanks

I suggest that you take an aptitude test. An aptitude test assesses your skills and your interests and matches you to the careers that are right for you.
Check with the high school adviser for one or your college/university (they have some awesome tests). Or, failing those, go to the workforce development agency (unemployment office) One really good one is called JobFit. Beware of the internet scams.
Once you take the test it will help identify careers that take little or no education clear up to a doctorate. Hope this helps.

What does my teacher mean "Develop a Unit of study using the lesson plan format"?

November 22009

I’m in an social studies education class and I’m kind of confused by this homework assignment. I thought a unit of study was a collection of different lesson plans over a period of time focusing on a particular theme of one subjects? Any ideas what my professor is asking for here?

exactly what you are saying, you need to make a unit about any topic related to social to social studies, does your teacher let you know about how many weeks will the unit has to cover? you can find lesson plan templates online but instead of doing it for one class period use it for the entire unit. for example day one, day two, day three etc. with the proper state standards, the objectives and activities that will cover the entire unit and the resources and materials that will be necessary for the lesson activities. Choose a good book and make all your lesson plans from it.

Can you please critique my resume?

I first would like to thank those who helped critique my previous cover letters. Your help is EXTREMELY appreciated.

Lesson plan idea (must be craft involved)?

October 152009

I have to do a lesson plan for an art class of mine where it has to be over one of the core curriculums (Science, Math, Language Arts, Social Studies) and teach the students something while also adding in an art project they could do in class that teaches them about it or applies to the lesson. Any ideas, websites, or both would be great!! Thanks!
The age level would be elementary

You didn’t specify the age for this lesson plan. Let me share this with you to get you started. The link contains an entire theme planned activity that starts with reading a popular book then it extends to activities that correlate with the book including; language arts, science and math, music and two art activities. I’m an advocate of offering art activities that allow children to freely express their creativity and imagination; so NO preconceived art here!

Also, all of these pages are beautifully illustrated and printable. You can even print them out and children can bring them home and share their creative day with their parents and siblings.

Hope this helps!

Current Event news articles! Help me?

September 292009

I need to find 4 current event articles dealing with NY and US only. They have to be a current article from the following 8 papers…NY times, Boston Globe, Miami Herald, Chicago Times, L.A. Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Washington Times…

Not only do I have to find the articles, but they must connect to the NYS learning standards (standard 1 only) for social studies.

I’ve looked for an hour now and can’t find an article. I need help finding the articles, but I”ll be doing the write ups and lesson plans for them, so you aren’t doing my work for me. i don’t want people to think that I am just trying to get you to do my work. I am not. I just need help starting!

Thanks if you cna help me!
no I am not in high school. I am a colege senior. I just need help finding the articles, I don’t need sarcasm thanks. I am in Block, and all education majors may have an inkling of an idea what that means. But for those of you that don’t it is basically a semester they overload you with work on purpose. Now add two jobs to that and see what you got. You have me. I am not asking you to do my homework, as I stated before. i just need help finding an article I can write about, connect to the standards of NY for social studies and then create a lesson plan about the article. And I have to do that 4 times. I have tried their websites, it is the connection part to the standards I am having trouble with. Thanks to those of you that are trying to help atleast!

i hope u find something

Another Poem… What Do You Think?

September 272009

Forgotten like socks
Underneath teenage beds my existence lied hidden from my eyes
In grade six
Until Caucasian lips
Forced poetry into lesson plans
Witch then forced my mix hands
To feed words onto blue lines
Giving me the freedom to regurgitate memories for a grade
Dried tears lied in the middle of note books and these note books became my own history books because in grade seven it became apparent that
Yellow skin does not have a section in social studies text books
Suicide thoughts came from pen points like thunder in a rain storm
I drew my scars with pried only to hide the pain I felt
Then I fell for a stuttering slam poet
Whose poetry never stuttered and if it did
Well poetry taught me how to look past that
Funny how our eyes only met between stanzas
Poetry helped our hands meet in every line brake
I carved memories of a beautiful mistress on lose leaf
Verbally drew salted water falls on scrap paper
And fought bipolar battles with ink

I have written my auto biography
Not up to now but up to last night

it sounds very bitter to me, but well written, it conveys your thoughts I believe
