I would like to record selected stories from NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Please advise.

September 212009

My wife teaches high school social studies and many times she could use the stories heard on NPR’s news shows in her lesson plans, however, you can listen to previous stories heard on NPR by visiting their web site, but you cannot download them to CD or DVD audio. You can purchase transcripts, however, for a teacher that becomes cost prohibitive. Since the audio is transmitted through the computer’s sound system, it would seem that one could attach a cassette tape deck or CD recorder through an audio output portal. I would appreciate any suggestions.

1st grade book suggestions?

September 172009

I read in the paper something about group that went around to schools and shelters to read to children. I decided to volunteer. Once everything was set (background check, fingerprints, etc), they gave me the place I’m going to. It’s a school about 20 minutes away from my house it a well, needy town. The schools can’t afford to hire extra people to come and help out the teachers, so this program is a lifesaver to them.

Once a week what happens is the teacher does her 30 minute math lesson, then gives the kids 30 minutes worth of quiet math work. Then she does 30 minute spelling lesson, and gives them 30 minutes worh of quiet spelling work. Then she gives the kids 30 minute social studies lesson, and 30 minutes worth of quiet work. Another teacher has the same schedule (just one is 30 minutes ahead of the other). During those 30 minutes of quiet work, I”m sitting in the back of the room with 1 student at a time (there learning to read homework book) while the teacher helps the students with the "queit work" they are doing. I have to run back and forth between both classes during "quiet work" time.

Anyway, then at the end of that, both classes have 45 minutes of reading groups. Each day is a different group. That means the other children are left doing SSR. I plan on having a outloud reading. Any suggestions on books? It’s a 1st grade class!
I don’t know why I did all that explaination lol. It’s just force of habit. Anyway just read this, what is a good book to be read to kids outloud in 1st grade?

The true story of the 3 little pigs
The New Kid by Katie Couric
Chrysanthemum
Cloudy with a chance of meatballs
Amelia Bedelia books are funny!
Alexander and the terrible, Horrible, no good, Very Bad Day
Where the Wild Things Are
Horrible Harry
The rainbow fish
Once upon a Cool Motorcycle dude
LOVE Janell Cannon books, like Stella Luna!
a bad case of stripes

Whatever you choose, remember to use lots of expression.
If you’re ever reading one on one, see if they’ll read to you or you can alternate pages

Have fun!!

Even though I know you’re a mom, you know about the expression thing.
Once you see how the kids respond, you can find a book that they might like. Also, if it’s an area with a large minority population, it’s good to find characters that are also, say black or latino, cuz the kids can identify.

Kindergarten lessons to teach colors?

September 152009

does anyone have any really cute good lessons on teaching the kids colors? I want to include math, science, language arts, or even social studies. Maybe using the rainbow for science….anyway does anyone have any lesson plans on colors? (for kindergarten). If you want to email me the lesson you have that would be great too (rachel@demauro.com) thank you tons!!

Study one color for the day. All activities utilize that color: Examples: (red) put out the red crayons/ red paint/ red playdoh, etc. for art… Have students use red pencils for writing/ doing any written work…Read the story about the little red hen…Act out how the color red makes you feel…etc.

Similar stories to "The Coyote who placed the stars"?

September 132009

I am putting together a lesson plan for my third graders and want to find a similar story for the students to compare and contrast it too on a venn diagram. I am hoping for one from another culture to involve more Social Studies. Any names of stories or websites would be great. The only ones I could find involve the roman gods and sex which would be inappropriate for 9 year olds. Thanks

you should ask in a literature category

Skype in the Classroom

September 132009

WEBSITE: http://www.teachertube.com Skypes easeofuse and video conferencing capability make it a hugely beneficial tool in helping students connect with others outside of the classroom walls. The greatest benefits for classroom use is that teachers can quickly and easily invite guests from all over the world to speak to their students. Additionally social studies and foreign language teachers can use Skype to connect with classes in other countries to share experiences in their native language and language arts teachers with the help of the school librarian can connect with the authors to share and read literature. A science teacher from another school or university could use Skypes video and audio resources connections to demonstrate the scientific process through various lab experiments. A zoologist could share the habitats of different animals while a doctor could discuss the impotents of sustaining a healthy lifestyle.

HELP! Elem. teaching interview and need a 10 min. lesson plan…?

September 112009

I just graduated yesterday and am endorsed in 3rd-8th grade. While I can technically teach the upper elementary grades, I feel most comfortable with middle school lang. arts and social studies. I have an interview in front of an 8-person panel for next week for Spanish Immersion. I have been informed to present a 10 min. lesson for elementary in any subject. I need help with suggestions as I haven’t been in an elem. classroom in quite a few months. I also have limited resources and it should be completely in Spanish. NOTE: I am not teaching Spanish, rather, teaching elem. subjects IN Spanish. Please help me come up with a short and interactive mini-lesson?
Sarah: It depends on the school or district really. I’m applying for what’s called a Spanish Immersion pool of applicants. Basically, we present to a panel and they then decide where they want to place us (if they hire us). For other mainstream positions, I have heard that you commonly do have to be interviewed by the principal and some other staff members, in some cases even parents! It’s very stressful to be a teacher, especially one just trying to get in. Good luck!

Wow…I’m so sorry I cannot help, but I’m 18 and am planning to major in Elementary Education in the future. Is every teacher required to teach in front of a panel before they are hired? Or is it required just for the school you are interviewing for?

Need a lesson plan for infant class.?

September 72009

I need art, music, science, math and social studies. The children are between the ages of 14 months and 20 months. I want to do a farm animal theme. If anyone can give me any ideas please let me know. Thanks…

Music: "Old McDonald Had a Farm" sing or play CD, I’ve used puppets of farm animals that are very soft and the kids love them. They usually have farm puppets at Dollar Stores. This reinforces animal sounds and names
Social Studies: Where animals live- duck lives in the water, horse and cow live in the stable, pig lives in the mud, etc. If you get some of the "Little People" farm animals, you can put them in the correct places.
Math: Counting Farm Animals- 1 pig, 2 pigs, 1 cow, 2 cows, etc
Science: Discovery- set up a farm center. Fisher Price and other companies have great farm play sets. Make sure you check age limits though. The kids can play with the animals, you can reinforce sounds, etc
Art: Color a farm scene or animal, Play Dough and farm animal shaped cookie cutters, give each child a drawing of a farm scene and stickers shaped like farm animals to put on the farm
Many of these just depend on the children, their development and what they are ready for. Always check for age restrictions!
Good Luck
