How do I calm my nerves during a driving lesson?

I can hardly go out on a driving lesson because im so nervous so i don’t take anything in and I have to go through the same things over and over. Does anyone have any tips or recommendations on how to calm myself?

Talk to yourself… either under ur breath, or in your head, and basically just do that to distract yourself from the nerves, e.g.

- Do a run through of where all the controls are

- comment on what other drivers / cyclists / pedestrians around you are doing, such as:
"what you waiting for? bloody christmas?"
or "sure you can’t get your car any further up me arse?"
or "come on, ya can get a bloody tank through that gap"
or "where’s that prat on the bike going? can I accelerate past yet? oops, no, not quite…."
or "hurry up you old bat!"
or "oh, brilliant, a cyclist" / "oh, brilliant, horses to tippy toe past".

- comment on where your going + what you’re doing, e.g,
"right, where’s that next turning?"
"left bit, right bit"
"Right, need to start indicatingggg…………… here!"
"oops, b*llocks, missed it!"
"oops, need to slow down a bit ‘ere"

try taking a few deep breaths before you start. Then, start out slow and get a feel for the car, road, traffic, etc. Then bring the car up to speed and take it easy. hope this helps

Try some herbal tea. I have heard that eating a Mars bar 30 minutes before hand can help.

Remind yourself that every other driver on the road went through this too.

The fact that you know it is your nerves causing you not to take things in is good. It means you’re NOT thick! As already said, remember nearly every driver went through the same thing so you are not alone, and above all talk to your instructor about how you feel. If he/she knows your fears he can tailor his instruction to suit.

blah blah blah…take a few breaths, take deep breaths, seems like not such a good idea. I mean, you know that. here is what you do. Pretend everyone is naked. You are dressed. SEE! you feel comfy now. Try it. or think of something goofy like that.

I drunk half a bottle of whisky before my test. Imagine my suprise when i was pulled half way through by the police and charged with drink driving. The courts banned me for 18 months even though i hadn’t passed my test!!
I still laugh even now as i wait for the early bus in the pouring rain.
