Lesson plan idea (must be craft involved)?
October 152009
I have to do a lesson plan for an art class of mine where it has to be over one of the core curriculums (Science, Math, Language Arts, Social Studies) and teach the students something while also adding in an art project they could do in class that teaches them about it or applies to the lesson. Any ideas, websites, or both would be great!! Thanks!
The age level would be elementary
You didn’t specify the age for this lesson plan. Let me share this with you to get you started. The link contains an entire theme planned activity that starts with reading a popular book then it extends to activities that correlate with the book including; language arts, science and math, music and two art activities. I’m an advocate of offering art activities that allow children to freely express their creativity and imagination; so NO preconceived art here!

Also, all of these pages are beautifully illustrated and printable. You can even print them out and children can bring them home and share their creative day with their parents and siblings.
Hope this helps!

The Maya Civilization is very interesting and a great topic to cover all areas. Have you heard of Bark Paintings?
The craft is easy to make and fun for the kids. I’m using paper bags, craft paint and some pictures with Maya Hieroglyphs that the kids can trace. Since we’re learning the maya number system, the kids will write their birth date using Maya hieroglyphs. Then, they will decorate by drawing and painting their favorite animals in bright colors. This craft takes a couple of days to complete but it’s simple, easy and fun for the kids. At the same time we cover the core curriculum:
Science- Fig trees, paper…
Math - Numbers, system…
Social Studies- Ancient civilization, Geography…
Art- Bark painting, colors, texture…
Language Arts- Reflection paper…
I went to the library and checked out books about the Mayas and their crafts. I hope this helped you somehow. Good luck!
