Life in the Arts - Guitar History Terrence Farrell

July 92009

Renown classical guitarist Terrence Farrell presents a music lesson on the guitar and it’s history.

LESSON PLAN:

Terrence ’s main objective in this lesson is to introduce students to the classical guitar in all aspects. How it is played and what it can play. A general introduction on how the guitar is played: the various techniques used that make it what it is (as a harmonic instrument it is one of the few instruments that can accompany itself). In the lecture the students will have demonstrated how one starts with “simple and easy ” music and how that can and does develop into more complex forms.

Terrence will tell the story of his first introduction to the guitar. He was in 4th grade and his school had a show-and-tell day. One of his classmates came to school with his guitar and played for his class. Terrence thought that it was just the neatest thing, so Terrence asked him if he would teach him how to play the guitar and he said “sure “. So Terrence asked what he should do first and his classmate said, “the first thing we are going to do is play a melody “. Terrence responded with,”what ’s a melody?” He replied with, “that is the part of a song you sing………..”

Topics that will also be discussed include the terms of music: what is harmony, melody, chords, arpeggios, bass, treble, etc.

PROGRAM GUEST

Terrence Farrell, since his professional debut in 1976, has become one of the world ’s most sought after classical guitarists, winning international acclaim for his concerts, television appearances and recordings. Born in Salzburg, Austria, Terrence began studying the guitar at the age of eight and eventually became the protégé of American guitarist Guy Horn. He has since gone on to win awards in competitions at the University of Washington, the Palm Springs Opera Guild and the Monterey Jazz Festival. His stylish, forceful musicianship has been praised for the eloquent versatility with which it moves from the classical to the romantic to the most demanding contemporary compositions. The depth, grace and elegance of his interpretations have moved audiences and critics alike.
